The President of Kazakhstan
Nursultan Nazarbayev, a Kazakh, was born in July 1940 in the Alma-Atinskaya Oblast. He has a doctor's degree in economics.
He graduated from a metallurgy technician school in the Karaganda Oblast and finished a correspondence course of the senior party school of the Soviet Union Communist Party's Central Committee.
He acted as party secretary of the Karaganda Oblast, secretary of the Kazakh Communist Party Central Committee, chairman of the Kazakh ministerial meeting, first secretary of the Kazakh Communist Party Central Committee, chairman of the Kazakh supreme soviet and president of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
Nazarbayev was elected president of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan in December 1991, and a referendum in April 1995 extended his presidency to 2000. He was re-elected twice in presidential races in January 1999 and December 2005 respectively.
He is married and has three daughters.
